DISCURSIVE STRATEGIES OF PERSUASION: ANALYZING PAKISTANI MOTIVATIONAL DISCOURSE ON SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS

Abstract

This research analyzes the persuasive tactics adopted by the Pakistani motivational speakers promoting themselves on YouTube through the English language. It primarily determines the use of these tactics by the speakers in their oratory so as to gain the approval of the listeners. The study is based on the Fairclough's Three-Dimensional Model for CDA and persuasive elements combining intertextuality, storytelling, metaphors, and circumlocution. The research method is qualitative carrying out a critical discourse analysis of 18 speeches delivered by the selected motivational speakers such as Muniba Mazari, Raja Zia ul Haq, Sahil Adeem, and Dr. Javed Iqbal. The most significant results indicate that storytelling and metaphors are the most powerful methods that can effectively captivate the audience by making difficult ideas easier to understand and emotionally coerce the audience. The research indicates that these persuasive techniques are not only enhancing the efficiency of the motivational discourse but also becoming a major factor in the formulation of socio-cultural attitudes and behaviors in the Pakistani context.
