PHILOSOPHICAL SPEECH ACTS IN JEDI DIALOGUE: A STUDY OF STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE.

Abstract

This study explores the philosophical speech acts within the dialogue of Jedi characters in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace through the lenses of Speech Act Theory and the SPEAKING Framework. Jedi dialogue, as a medium of moral instruction, transcends mere communication and reflects deeper philosophical teachings, including mindfulness, humility, and emotional discipline. By analyzing key dialogues of Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Yoda, the research demonstrates how Jedi speech acts function not only to advance the plot but also as tools of moral and spiritual guidance. Through a qualitative analysis, this paper identifies the types of speech acts employed by the Jedi, such as assertive, directives, and expressive, and interprets their philosophical significance. The findings suggest that Jedi communication, while contextualized within a fantastical narrative, embodies timeless human truths about the power of language as a medium for wisdom and ethical reflection. This study contributes to the understanding of cinematic dialogue as a form of philosophical expression and highlights the role of language in shaping moral consciousness.
