Abstract

This study paper discusses the subtle nature of interaction between conventional Pakistani folk art and modern product design. The necessity to preserve, redefine and incorporate the local heritage within the contemporary creative practices in the face of rising globalization and cultural homogenization has emerged as a cultural imperative and design opportunity. Folk art in Pakistan is very much connected to the local traditions, symbolism and craftsmanship where the contemporary designer is finding a rich visual and cultural vocabulary that can be adapted to the modern products. This paper discusses how certain cultural aspects such as motifs, color palettes, handcrafted methods, and embedded narratives are transposed into novel product forms. It explores how designers merge traditional aesthetics with the new materials, technologies, and user-driven design using case studies, visual analyses, and interviews. It also explores the socio-economic ramifications of such a process, with the themes of artisan collaboration, cultural sustainability, and ethical production being major concerns. The paper also discusses the issues that designers have to deal with such as the danger of cultural appropriation, loss of authenticity, and marginalization of crafts. The study offers a critical approach to understand the effect of this change through theoretical frameworks like the encoding/decoding model by Stuart Hall and the cultural capital by Bourdieu. Finally, this paper contends that the incorporation of folk art into design as an ethical practice not only allows preservation of intangible heritage but also promotes innovation based on identity and economic empowerment.
