Abstract

This study critically examines the element of realism in the ghazals of Darwesh Durrani, a prominent contemporary Pashto poet from Balochistan. The paper explores how Durrani’s poetry reflects the socio-political, cultural, and existential realities of Pashtun society. Through textual analysis of selected ghazals, the study highlights the poet’s engagement with themes such as war, social injustice, class disparity, collective negligence, and human suffering. The research further situates Durrani’s poetic expression within broader philosophical discourses, particularly existentialism, emphasizing the tension between existence and non-existence, and the psychological struggles of individuals in conflict-ridden environments. His poetry not only portrays harsh ground realities but also incorporates elements of romantic realism, where emotional depth and subjective experience are given significant importance. Moreover, the study underscores Durrani’s critique of political instability, external interference, and internal disunity within Pashtun society. His ghazals serve as a powerful medium for articulating resistance, awareness, and the need for social cohesion and peace. The analysis concludes that realism in Durrani’s ghazals is multifaceted, blending personal, social, and philosophical dimensions, thereby establishing his work as a significant contribution to modern Pashto literature.
