MITIGATING PUBLIC SPEAKING ANXIETY IN ESL LEARNERS THROUGH TECHNOLOGY ENHANCED LANGUAGE LEARNING

This review explores the efficacy of Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) interventions in alleviating public speaking anxiety among ESL learners. Public speaking anxiety remains a significant barrier for language learners, impacting their confidence and communicative performance (Horwitz et al., 1986). The study emphasizes the effectiveness of systematic desensitization, incremental exposure to speaking tasks, and positive reinforcement in helping ESL students overcome anxiety and improve English communication skills. TELL addresses public speaking anxiety by providing immersive and flexible learning environments (Dörnyei & Ryan, 2015). Tools such as speech recognition software can offer immediate feedback on pronunciation and fluency, enhancing learners’ self-confidence and reducing anxiety associated with speaking errors. Interactive features and simulations within TELL platforms provide a secure environment for students to practice speaking. Factors influencing ESL learners’ perceptions of TELL interventions include digital literacy, access to technology, and prior exposure to educational technology. This review underscores the comprehensive approach necessary to address public speaking anxiety in ESL contexts, ultimately fostering language proficiency and communication confidence.
